INTRODUCTION TO FILMMAKING

Description: INTRO: LECTURE-PRESENTATION

Screenwriting
The Hollywood Paradigm--a three act story: set-up, confrontation, and resolution; inciting incident, turning points, plot points, midpoint, pitch points, and climax; scene structure: beats, dramatic arc, shift of power, text & subtext, conflict; character analysis: conscious goal & unconscious desire, back story & character flaw; given circumstances & emotional charge.

Story idea pitching session
Timing: 4 meetings; screenings 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM; class meetings: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

LEVEL 1

Description: DEVELOPMENT & PREPRODUCTION:
SCRIPTING AND BLOCKING A NON-DIALOGUE SCENE
(hands-on in-class group exercise)


Screenwriting
Story structure, dramatic arc, beats, shift of power, text & subtext, conflict; character development: conscious goal & unconscious desire, back story & character flaw; given circumstances & emotional charge. 

Directing
Grammar of the film language: image sizes, 180-degree rule; in-depth vs. flat frame composition; visual emphasis and de-emphasis; scene coverage: master shot w/covering angles; overlapping action; blocking a non-dialogue scene.
Timing: 5 meetings; 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Prerequisites: Introduction to Filmmaking or equivalent

LEVEL 2

Description: PRODUCTION: 
SCRIPTING, BLOCKING, SHOOTING, AND EDITING A NON-DIALOGUE SCENE
(hands-on exercise in groups of 4 during and outside class hours)

Directing
Grammar of the film language: image sizes, 180-degree rule; in-depth vs. flat frame composition; visual emphasis and de-emphasis; scene coverage: master shot w/covering angles; overlapping action; blocking a non-dialogue scene.

Editing
Editing procedures; editing software operations; basic rules of picture editing: cutting patters, cutting on action, cutting for continuity vs. for dramatic narrative, stretching & compressing moments, etc.
Timing: 5 meetings; 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Prerequisites: Level 1 or equivalent
Seats: 25
